Kawaljit Singh, once a successful entrepreneur in the travel industry, faced a life-altering challenge when he was diagnosed with kidney failure at just 35 years old. Devastated by the sudden pause in his life’s plans, he found himself thrust into the world of dialysis, grappling with the harsh realities of a disease typically associated with older individuals. Despite his personal struggles, Kawaljit chose to transform his adversity into a mission of compassion and service.

Recognizing the deficiencies in dialysis care and the lack of awareness among patients, especially the young and vulnerable, he resolved to make a difference. Disheartened by the profit-driven practices in many medical facilities, Kawaljit envisioned a centre where quality care and affordability converge. In 2020, amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which underscored healthcare disparities, Kawaljit founded Reneplus Dialysis Centre. His aim was clear: to provide superior dialysis care at a fixed, affordable rate of INR 3000 per session, significantly below market averages. His centre not only prioritizes medical excellence but also emphasizes patient education and emotional support, aspects he deeply understands as a former patient himself.

Driven by his personal journey and a profound sense of duty towards humanity, Kawaljit’s vision extends beyond mere treatment. He dreams of expanding his centres across India, including free facilities for those unable to afford quality healthcare. His mission is twofold: to alleviate the physical and emotional burdens of kidney disease and to raise awareness about prevention and management.

Later in 2021, as many hospitals started shutting down dialysis centres, Kawaljit saw an urgent need for continued care. Recognizing that dialysis cannot be paused regardless of circumstances, Reneplus Dialysis Centre began providing home dialysis in different parts of Delhi NCR at a cost of just INR 6500 per session. This service includes the machine, RO, technician cost, and all dialysis raw materials, allowing patients to receive treatment in the comfort of their homes. This innovative approach marked a revolution, as Reneplus closed its dialysis unit and became India’s only home dialysis company, focusing solely on home treatments.

Q: What inspired you to embrace home dialysis as a means of managing kidney failure, particularly after experiencing success in the travel business?

A: In 2020, as COVID-19 led to the shutdown of many kidney dialysis centres, the resulting crisis highlighted a critical gap in healthcare. Personally affected, I faced numerous challenges in Noida and Indirapuram, including high costs, poor hygiene, and inconsistent technician expertise. Determined to make a difference, I resolved to open my dialysis centre, aiming to provide superior quality care that exceeds even super-speciality hospital standards, all while capping the cost at an affordable INR 3000 per session. This endeavour is driven by my commitment to ensuring that no patient has to endure the hardships I faced during those trying times.

Q: Could you share more about your personal experience with home dialysis and how it has impacted your daily life and routines?

A: In 2020, I transitioned to home dialysis, which drastically improved my life. Previously, I had to travel 15-20 kilometres from Noida to Indirapuram and Vaishali, spending 1.5 hours navigating traffic. The return journey, often done alone post-dialysis, was exhausting and challenging. Unlike the hospital, where the risk of infections like HIV and hepatitis B or C is significant, home dialysis with a personalized machine virtually eliminates this risk. The mental strain of frequent hospital visits, parking hassles, long waits, and dealing with a crowded, often depressing environment was immense. Home dialysis brought a welcome change, allowing me to schedule sessions at my convenience, usually around 4 PM. It turned into quality “me time”—watching movies, playing chess with my son, eating home-cooked meals, and even catching up on work in a comfortable, homely setting, surrounded by my family. This shift not only improved my physical health but also significantly boosted my mental well-being.

Q: What are some of the key benefits and challenges you have encountered with home dialysis, both from a personal perspective and in comparison to traditional center-based dialysis?

A: At home, we maintain the highest quality standards for dialysis. We ensure the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) level is below 10, change the RO filters monthly, and prioritize the cleanliness of the machine and hygiene of the room. These factors are crucial to providing a safe and effective home dialysis environment.

Q: How do you ensure the highest quality of care and adherence to best practices while managing dialysis at home?

A: Ensuring the highest quality of care involves rigorous training and adherence to strict protocols. We undergo continuous education on the latest dialysis techniques and safety measures. The dialysis machine and associated equipment are regularly serviced and maintained according to manufacturer guidelines. Additionally, we keep a detailed log of each dialysis session, monitoring vital signs and machine parameters to detect and address any issues promptly.

Q: Can you discuss some of the adjustments and adaptations you had to make in your living space and lifestyle to accommodate home dialysis?

A: Accommodating home dialysis required significant changes. We dedicated a specific room for dialysis, ensuring it was spacious, well-ventilated, and sterile.
